Barbados’ junior surfers chart a path in the North at the JADA sponsored Event 4 of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s season

Event four of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s five event season was held at Friars Well (otherwise known as Hull) in St. Lucy on the 14th November 2010. The event was a special first as no surfing event has ever been held at Friars Well and an opportune North Swell forecast for that Sunday allowed a shift in venue to showcase our juniors’ surfing skills in the perfect chest to head high right surf break. The event was also a first for the Club’s new sponsor the JADA Group the leading Construction group of Companies in Barbados, who shares the Club’s vision for the development of Barbados’ young athletes. It was fitting that the event took place a mere ‘stones throw’ from the Company’s headquarters.

Friars Well (Hull) holds a distinctive place in the history of surfing in Barbados. The name Hull is derived from the practice of surfing shaped pieces of wood or Hulling, which is still practiced today by many of the nearby residents of Friars Well. The practice is said to date back to the early 1900s even before the more modern form of surfing and surfing equipment arrived to our shores. The junior members of the Club were honored to share waves with the many Hullers and watch them trim across the waves, stand and spin their custom surf crafts. The Club would like to thank the surfing community of Friars Well for sharing their waves on such a special occasion.

Given that this was the Club’s penultimate event the junior surfers stepped up their performances to make a stand for their final season rankings. Being that it was an unfamiliar surf break for all it showcased their adaptability to new surf conditions, and while some were acclimatizing to the waves in the earlier heats of the day, by the finals all were blasting their turns as seasoned Hull riders.

In the premier division the Under 18 Boys, Daniel Edghill would take the win and edge within 60 points in the overall season standing of division leader Joshua Burke heading into our final event, with his second place finish in event four Dane Mackie is also still very much in the hunt for that Under 18 championship. We are in for a race to the wire and expect a heated battle on December 11th for this coveted crown.

In the youngest division the 10 & Under (Menehune) Division, Andrew Rose would demonstrate fine form on the solid right break to win the division and move into second place in the season rankings chasing Che Allan who finished second on the day. The last surf events have seen a back and forth between these two friends and competitors, but our youngest division exhibits some of the finest surfers of their age, Jacob Burke, Zander Venezia, Evan Moll and Yuri Scutt, who will challenge for the future crown.

In the 12 & Under Division and 14 & under division there is also a back and forth battle ensuing between Dane Mackie and Joshua Burke. A first place finish on Sunday in the 12 & Under moves Mackie within striking range of season leader Burke leading into the final event. A similar scenario unfolds in the 14 & Under where Burke with a win in that division last Sunday maintains a slim lead over second place Mackie heading down the home stretch, but with Chelsea Tuach and Daniel Edghill in that divisional hunt anything is possible and ratings will be on the line come the season’s final event.

The Under 16 division saw Chelsea Roett extend her season lead with a second place finish. With his first place in the division on Sunday, Daniel Edghill moves within a few hundred points in the season rankings, with fine performances were all showcased by Caelum Blandford, Dane Mackie, Chelsea Tuach, and Joshua Burke.

Finally the Under 18 Girls saw Chelsea Roett maintain her perfect record having won all four Barbados Junior Surfing Club events thus far for the year and lock in the overall season win. Chelsea Tuach has also being performing incredibly well throughout the BJSC season and both girls have amassed fantastic results at local and international events for the year. The Chelseas are true ambassadors for the surfing sport in Barbados and an example for up and coming girls such as Isabella Venezia who chases them in third place in the overall ranking. Isabella is poised to take the helm for junior girl surfers over the next few years.

All in all event four of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series was another success and provided an exciting prelude for Event 5 which is to be held on December 11th 2010 and sponsored by Fujitsu Barbados, the third largest IT Company in the world and the region's largest IT Services Provider. BJSC Burkie Junior Surf Series to be held at Maycocks, St. Lucy on Sunday 14th November 2010

The fourth event of the BJSC Burkie Junior Surf Series is to be held at Hull/Friars Well, St. Lucy on Sunday 14th November 2010. The event is being sponsored by Jada Construction.

To get there take left after Port St. Charles pass Six Mens, Keep left at Y junction, pass Fish Pot Restaurant, keep right up hill which leads to Cement Plant/Portland. Make the second left into gap to Friars Well which is at top of hill. There is a sign on electricity post on right hand which is partially broken but reads Friars Well. Folow road to beach. The divisions to be contested include 10& Under, 12& Under, 14& Under, Under 16 and Under 18 with 12& Under Girls and Under 18 Girls. Cost of entry is $30 for first division entered and $5 for additional divisions.

MACKIE AND TUACH HEAD TO PUERTO RICO FOR THE RIP CURL NATIONAL FINALS

Chelsea Tuach and Dane Mackie will be amongst some of the world’s best Groms who will join the ASP’s best male and female surfers in a historic fashion. It will be the first time the world will witness the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final presented by H2O Overdrive held amidst the ultimate stage of the Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhere in Puerto Rico”.

With a 3-day waiting period, October 30th to November 1st, Dane and Chelsea will be amongst the 32 qualifiers who will join 4 local Puerto Rican standouts to battle it out for prize money and international fame, as the National Final will be transmitted to the world through the world wide webcast. The competitors will be in top form, ready to tackle what is so often referred to as “The Atlantic’s Hawaii” – Middles, Puerto Rico. True to the mystique of the Rip Curl Pro Search, the event will have mobile capabilities, staying nimble to what the swell and weather conditions produce.

Chelsea Tuach placed 1st in the Girls 16 & Under Division in the Rip Curl Gromsearch held in August at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina earning her a coveted spot at the finals. Dane Mackie placed 2nd in the 12 & Under in New Symrna, Florida in August in what was deemed the closest final of the day and will also be making his mark at the final in Puerto Rico.

The format for this year is that each competitor will surf a first-round, 15-minute heat where the heat winners will move straight to the final and the second and third place surfers will surf a do-or-die second round heat. The top two will advance to the 4-man final to battle it out for the top spot and $500 cash. The winners of the Boys and Girls 16/under divisions will get the boarding pass to the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2011 to compete in the International GromSearch Finals.

The Rip Curl GromSearch sponsors are stepping it up big for the National final. H2O Overdrive, and Dragon Eyewear will be stepping it up with special prizes for Manaeuver of the Event and the Highest Heat Total of the Event. Other sponsors are Power Balance and Bubble Gum Wax.

BARBADOS JUNIOR CLUB HOSTS 1ST ANNUAL FAMILY FUN DAY – FEATURES NEW GENERATION OF SURFING TALENT - SPONSORED BY HOUGH CAPITAL MANAGEMENT

16TH OCTOBER 2010 – SURFERS POINT, CHRIST CHURCH

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club held its 1st annual BJSC Family Fun Day surf event –sponsored by Hough Capital Management (Barbados) Ltd. on October 16th 2010. The event was held in 1-2 foot waves at Surfers Point, Inch Marlow in Christ Church.

The event was a first of its kind in Barbados catering to a new generation of Super Groms. By eliminating the top 6 ranked surfers from each division, the Club was looking for new talent to showcase their surfing skills in each division and the event delivered just that. According to BJSC President, Alan Burke “ It was great to see the sparkle on the kids faces whilst surfing a contest for the very first time and kids whom have been surfing only for a mere 4-6 hours of their life, competing and making it to the finals! This brought back very fond memories, personally, of why you surf contests, the opportunity to speed up the learning process and most of all for the fun and camaraderie that was involved!”

The fun day did not omit the Club’s ranked surfers as they actively participated in helping run the event for the members of the Club. The juniors were involved in learning judging, timekeeping, tabulation of heat score among other tasks on the day. The Club works to teach its juniors not only competitive surfing skills in the water but provides the opportunity for these surfers to learn and appreciate what it takes to run a surf event, especially the amount of concentration and pressure involved when judging and time keeping accurately.

The Club put the task to their junior members to design the event T-Shirts, the winning design was selected by the Club and for this event Jacob Burke’s design featured on all the Club’s shirts. Such a success was the art contest that the Club will now use their junior’s art for all future Club events.

The event also featured new divisions in which all could participate running a junior Longboard, Kids Expression Session where the best single maneuver wins and Parent/Child Tag Team event where the both the parent and child had to count one scoring ride within a 20 minute timeframe. According to Burke “It was also the first time a Junior Longboard division was ever contested in Barbados and by the looks of it, we have some very talented long boarders on the rise.”

The wave conditions were idyllic for a number of the up and coming surfers and coupled with a variety of beach games for prizes their was food, sun and fun for all the families that attended. October 16th 2010 - The Barbados Junior Surfing Club is hosting our Family Fun Day event sponsored by Hough Capital Management (Barbados) Ltd. which will run a Super Grom surf series catering to the surfers in our membership who have not placed higher than 6th in any of our other events this year, as well as other fun surf activities for all members including Long boarding, an Expression Session, Family Team events and beach activities for all family members. The event is scheduled to take place on Oc...tober 16th 2010.

Surfing Divisions to be run are Super Grom Surf series, Long boarding and Family Team events as follows:

(1) Super Grom Surf Series
Divisions to be run: Surfers in the following age classes 12-U, 14-U and U-18 Boys and U-18 girls that have not placed 6th or higher in any BJSC Event/Division for 2010.

(2) Long boarding Contest
Long boarding division/all ages up to U18 welcome.

(3) Family Team fun events
a. Parent/Child. Fifteen/twenty minute heats. One wave each to count for two wave team score. Competitor child first in water must claim wave they wish to keep and come to beach tag the parent who then must go out and claim what they think to be their best scoring wave. Overall two waves scored, highest team total wins.

b. Kids Expression session. Choose your move, best move wins

c. Assorted Beach Activities – To be Determined

BARBADOS JUNIOR SURFERS DOMINATE AT NKF SURF FESTIVAL IN COCOA BEACH

6th SEPTEMBER 2010 – COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA

The final leg for the Barbados Junior Surf Club’s summer events was the 25th National Kidney Foundation Pro-Am Surf Festival held at Cocoa Beach, Florida, from September 4th- 6th, 2010. A nine member contingent of BJSC junior surfers including Chelsea Tuach in the Women’s Pro; Jordan Heaselgrave in Pro Men and Pro Junior Men; Chelsea Roett in the Girls 13-17; Dane Mackie and Josh Burke in the 12-14 Boys, Isabella Venezia in Girls 10-12; Evan Moll in Boys 10-12; Zander Venezia in Super Menehune Boys and Jacob Burke in Menehune, travelled to the birthplace of 9 Time World Champion, Kelly Slater to take on any and all contenders. By the end of the event the majority of the team staked their claim on the famous sands of Cocoa Beach with finals placing and impressive performances in front of the captivated throngs on hand. The Barbados Junior Surf Club assisted its travelling juniors with funding for this event.

The opening day of the event saw some anticipated swell from the passing hurricane Earl but this quickly disappeared as the system moved north presenting challenging conditions with waves in the knee to thigh high range. With the contest running 15 minute heats and beach starts time was critical and wave selection imperative in order to advance to the next round.

Both sides of the famous Cocoa Beach pier were packed with spectators who witnessed some of the finest pros and up-and-coming amateurs on the East Coast. In addition to surfing, the event featured stand-up paddle boarding, tandem exhibitions, karate displays and a bikini contest for the landlubbers.

Chelsea Tuach would take the premiere prize and a mammoth trophy with a first place finish in the Angel Eyewear Women's Pro. The 14 year old Chelsea would arrive in Cocoa Beach on the heels of a Rip Curl Grom Search victory in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with an aura of confidence, previously entered in the Women’s Amateur division she took the next step in her surfing career and decided to take on the Pro. "I know some of the girls are older and they're really good, but I figure I'm at that level now," Tuach said. According to BJSC President, Alan Burke, “When we were signing her up, I had almost given the lady the money for her to enter as an amateur," he said. "But I looked at Chelsea and told her, 'It's time to take that next step. You're ready.' And true to her word Chelsea would win the coveted first place trophy taking down Team USA surfers Jasset Umbel of Melbourne Beach and Nikki Viesins of Indialantic, along with Hawaii's Leah Dawson in the process.

Not to be outdone Chelsea Roett and Dane Mackie also provided outstanding performances in the quickly fading surf. Roett would take that coveted 1st place in the Women’s Amateur division and Mackie would take 1st place in the Boys 12-14 age division. Bothe have seen outstanding results this summer with Roett placing second in the women’s division of the Rip Curl Grom Search in the Outer Banks as well as a 1st place finish in the U16 & U18 girls division at the BSA Caribbean Junior Surf Festival in Barbados. Mackie also placed 2nd in the Boys U12 Division at the Rip Curl Grom Search in New Smyrna Beach and 3rd in the Boys Under 14 at the same event. He would go on the a semi final finish in the Boys 12-14 age group at the US East Coast Surf Championships in Virginia Beach.

Josh Burke would also put on an impressive display of aerial and carving antics to a 2nd place finish in the Boys 12-14 division providing Barbados with the one-two punch in that division. Isabella Venezia would finish 3rd in the girls 10-12. Evan Moll and Zander Venezia placed 4th in their respective divisions, boys 10-12 and Menehune.

Out of our nine surfers seven of the Barbadian competitors made it to their respective finals which was an outstanding achievement. BJSC President and Coach, Alan Burke was impressed with the contingent’s performance. All in all an exceptional summer has been had by all BJSC juniors in the international arena and the Club is looking forward to the next international showing and another showcase of our incredible growing field of talent in the surf.

BJSC TEAM CHALLENGES HURRICANE DANIELLE SWELL AND AN INTERNATIONAL FIELD OF SURFERS AT THE US EAST COAST SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS

30TH AUGUST 2010 – VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA USA.

A familiar Virginia Beach setting lay before Alan Burke, President and Coach to the Barbados Junior Surfing Club team, today a competitor in the Senior Men’s division and eventual 3rd Place finisher in that division’s final. The three storey judging towers loomed over a landscape of sponsor tents and two offshore podiums of head high swell compliments of hurricane Danielle. The stage was set and the East Coast Surf Championships were on.

The event featured many well known pro and amateur surfers both from the US and abroad, Burke himself was a past winner in the Pro division in 1991, and the event organizers remember that victory like it was yesterday. In fact this year as the event celebrated its 48th year running many of its past winners were recognized throughout the series. The organizers recently researched and published results dating back to the event’s origins in 1963 making the ECSC the second longest running surf event in the world and the US East Coast’s largest surf event today.

The event is a special one for Barbados, not only have our surfers traditionally excelled in the Virginia Beach surf, the Barbados Tourism Authority is a main sponsor of the event with first place prize in the Pro division being a trip to Barbados for our Independence Surf Pro in November, also Barbados fielded the largest international contingent from any nation at the event. Both Alan Burke of the BJSC and Ignatius Marshall of the BTA spoke at length with event organizers and commentators while in the background thousands were on hand to partake in the annual festival that included concerts, FMX and motocross exhibitions, Reef girl’s contests, sponsor parties and movie premieres among other activities. But our juniors, in part funded by the Barbados Junior Surfing Club, were here on official business, we were here to surf.

The Open Short board division was no cake walk for our young team, and an impressive Joshua Burke would carve and air his way to the final 16 in the quarter finals against a talented field of 64 international competitors that included Costa Rica’s Jairo Perez, Jamaica’s Icah Wilmot and the US East Coast’s Cameron Richards. Burke’s quarter final placing was a fantastic achievement for the 13 year old and a harbinger of great things to come as the Barbados junior team grows strength through strength.

In the Boys 12-14 age division Dane Mackie would also challenge all 64 contenders with his flowing style, off the lips and carves. The pool of talent in this age group was also equally daunting but Dane would not take any prisoners as he battled to a stacked semi final heat where he would place fourth to Lucas Silveria from Brazil, and the US contenders Cam Richards and Giorgio Gomez finishing in the top 8 of that division.

The Pro and Pro Junior divisions were loaded with international talent, Jordan Heaselgrave our oldest competitor on the team would finish 3rd in his Round One heat in the Pro Juniors for an =17th finish and =33rd in the Pro Men.

In the youngest age group the 9 & Under, Jacob Burke would fight the field of 32 young groms to a fourth place berth on the final, the highest placing of any of our team members in the entire event. Young Burke showed his class and style and is walking in his family’s footsteps proving that he is a future force to be reckoned with on the international stage.

In the 11& Under (Menehune) age group our highest placing team member Andrew Rose challenged the field of 56 to a 3rd place finish in the top 16 quarter finals. Rose would also post the highest heat scores in his Round Two heat in that division as he battled through to the quarter finals a 14.8 two wave total. He received the acclaim from the commentators as he ripped his outside set wave straight in front to the judging booth on route to an 8 point wave score…

“That is the future of surfing right there” Indeed the team has shown that it is the future of Barbados’ surfing. Although it was unfortunate that many of the team were battling a flu virus during the event they exhibited great performances and are mature beyond their years, developing competitive savvy in the international arena. There is nothing but a bright future ahead for Barbadian surfing, and we expect to be back at the East Coast Surf Championships next year and take the event by storm.

Dane Mackie top grom at the Rip Curl Grom Search in New Smyrna Beach

21-August-2010. The Bajan Team of Jordan Heaselgrave, Dane Mackie, Joshua Burke and Jacob Burke made their appearance at the Rip Curl Grom Search presented by H20 Overdrive at New Smyrna Beach Inlet in Florida on August 21, 2010.

Groms from across the Sunshine State invaded New Smyrna Beach for the fourth and final stop of the Rip Curl Grom Search. A fun, crossed up swell welcomed the competitors who carried aspirations of the title, the cash, the loot, the coveted National Finals slot, and the bragging rights awarded to the 2009 Rip Curl Grom Search Florida Champion.

Despite small yet contestable conditions The Boys 12/under was the first final to hit the water on Sunday as the tide turned and the swell pushed. The closest final of the day, and Dane Mackie was narrowly edged out by Cobie Gitmer. Dane worked his way to the final of the 14 & Under division and placed a commendable 3rd overall.

Jordan Heaselgrave finished =5th in the 16 & Under, Josh Burke =9th in the 16 & Under =5th in the 14 & Under and =5th in the 12 & Under Divisions while Jacob Burke =17th In the 12 & Under.

The final of the Rip Curl Grom Search will be held in Puerto Rico in October 2010 in conjunction with the Rip Curl Pro Search and promises to be an epic event.

Barbados junior surfers shine as Chelsea Tuach wins the Girls Division at Rip Curl Grom Search in Outer Banks

Bridgetown - Aug 25.

A team of Barbados' junior surfers, in part funded by the Barbados Junior Surfing Club, battled against the heated competition in the Outer Banks of North Carolina at the Rip Curl Grom Search on August 16, 2010. The Grom Search is a series of contests over many regions bringing together the best male and female under 16 surfers from around the world to ultimately find the "best grom" in an international finale.

The Barbados contingent were greeted at Lillian Street in Kitty Hawk by thumping head high beach break. Present to do Barbados and themselves proud were Che Allan and Andrew Rose representing the Under 12s, Josh Galt and Danny Edghill the Under 14 challengers, Under 16 East Coast veteran Jordan Heaselgrave, and our top female surfers Chelsea Roett and Chelsea Tuach. The contestants would be challenged by the conditions with 15 minutes heats starting from the paddle out on the beach, making the selection of quality waves in that short timeframe vital to their success.

At the close of play Barbados' girls would once again make the country proud with Chelsea Tuach in 1st place on the Kitty Hawk podium with 15.5 score total for her best two waves and Chelsea Roett in 2nd place with 12.5 score total. With her win Chelsea Tuach advances to compete in the Grom Search's US final in Puerto Rico in October. Both girls have staked their claim on the US East Coast and have continued their domination at the Ripcurl Grom Search. The Chelseas both advanced directly to the finals with first place finishes in Round One of their division, Chelsea Roett having the day's highest heat score for the girls of 16.16 for her two wave total. Last year roles were reversed with Chelsea Roett as the first place winner in the Rip Curl in New Symrna Beach and Chelsea Tuach placing second. Both advanced to the US finals where Roett finished in overall 3rd place.

New comer to the Rip Curl Grom Search was Danny Edghill, who was a standout performer on the day. Danny brought a complete repertoire of big carves, reverses and airs as he hacked the pounding beachbreak to 2nd place finish in the Under 14 Boys division. Josh Galt also a new comer to the event demonstrated his rapid progress as a competitive surfer with some solid cutbacks and hacks. Despite Galt's equal 17th place finish at this year's event expect to see him on the Rip Curl podium in the very near future.

In the Under 12 Boys division Che Allan would finish equal 5th by advancing straight to semi final one from the day's first heat demonstrating his mature style with solid cutbacks and turns. Also demonstrating his fine form, Andrew Rose slashed the solid beachbreak and would finish equal 13th on the day. Both of these young groms at the event displayed winning form but fell prey to the challenging conditions as the day wore on.

Jordan Heaselgrave would place one of the day's high heat scores of 15.5 in his round one heat of the Under 16 Boys in what the announcers would call the most heated contest of the day. Jordan would show off his repertoire of vertical re-entries and slashes to eliminate the field. Jordan would advance straight to the semi-finals where he finished equal 5th in the division.

A great event was had by all, spectators and competitors alike. The level of surfing in Barbados is progressing at rapid speed and our juniors have shown they can battle against the best at home or abroad. As they continue to expose themselves in international competition expect to see your local names and faces on the surf contest podiums far and afield.
