International Surf Contests in Summer and Team Selection Criteria

Dear Members,

As stated in our mission the Barbados Junior Surfing Club ("BJSC") works to get our developing juniors international exposure in select quality events. The goal is to showcase the talents of our rising Juniors, uplift Barbados in the eyes of the international surfing community, and develop interest from potential sponsors in our surfers. The BJSC has been researching various contests which we feel would be beneficial for juniors surfers to attend during the summer months in order to gain both experience and exposure in the international surfing community. We welcome interested members to participate in the following:

To our members who are also members of the Barbados Surfing Association ("BSA"), please note that at present some of these contests have conflicting dates with local BSA contests. We suggest in your planning that you review the dates in order to determine the most appropriate schedule to meet your competitive needs. For further information please vist their website at http://www.barbadossurfingassociation.org/ .
BJSC TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA

The BJSC Executive is also developing a Team Selection Criteria for public dissemination. This document is to provide transparency to all members on how BJSC junior teams will be selected going forward, the attributes you as members can work towards to gain entry to traveling teams at selected events, and how financial assistance may be awarded to travelling junior surfers on the BJSC Team. For the above trips some monetary contribution will be provided to the Team travelling to the four contests this summer.

We also welcome any junior members that do not necessarily make the Team selection to join us as well at these international events. We believe all experience in competition whether local, regional or international is beneficial to your development as a Junior Surfer. We, the BJSC, are a family with a goal to provide an enriched surfing experience to all our Juniors.

Please keep posted for future developments on our Team Selection Criteria.

BJSC MEMBER JOSHUA BURKE SIGNS TWO YEAR SURF DEAL

JOSHUA BURKE, Barbados most improved surfer and 2009 Barbados U-12 National Champion, surfed his way into the hearts of the Americans at the 46th Ron Jon Easter Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach Florida three weekends ago, throwing airs and tailslides and shooting the pier with style, landing a two year deal with traction pad giant X-TRAK and MAGMA surf wax.

Surf Legend, Four times Women’s World Surfing Champion Frieda Zamba Shaw and team Manager for X-TRAK & MAGMA surf wax was equally impressed with the Cocoa Beach crowd of 13 year old Burke’s potential !,

“As team manager for X-Trak surf traction and Magma wax I have been looking for that “under the radar kid” to represent X-Trak and Magma wax in the Caribbean. I’m confident I found him in Barbados..Joshua Burke! Joshua surfed his way into the finals of the Ron Jon Easter fest causing quite a buzz on the beach with his progressive surfing at such a young age. One look at this kid and I knew he was exactly what we needed. From his mature surfing talent to being coached by a former international surf star in his dad Alan Burke to the pure surf stoke look in his smile. We are stoked to have Joshua on our team!”

August 2009, Burke competed in the Rip Curl Gromsearch New Smyrna beach regional’s,narrowly qualifying for the November Nationals in Salt Creek California, then was dealt with a first round elimination due to an interference call,”After these two events something clicked in Josh” states Coach Alan Burke,” I think the realization of the talent internationally hit a nerve causing his competitive jean that runs through out the entire Burke family to activate”says coach Burke.

X-TRAK/MAGMA team rider Burke has a very busy 2010 ahead, besides competing in the next local (Burkie Junior Surfing championship Series)BJSCS/Ashford Dairies event on June 12th at Longbeach,he will be competing in three international events from Aug 19th- Sept 8th, Rip Curl gromsearch in New Smyrna beach, 48th East Coast Surfing Championships Virginia beach and Ron Jon/National Kidney Foundation Cocoa beach Pier Florida.

Results from the BJSC “Salty Mudd 'N' Eggs” Easter Treasure Hunt & Fun Rally

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club held its “Salty Mudd 'N' Eggs” Easter Treasure Hunt & Fun Rally on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The event was a fundraiser to assist with junior surfers competing locally and internationally.

The teams were varied, some joint parent/junior surfer teams, some international flavour including those representing Trinidad, some representing California, we even had the all-girl Shotz who had their own team T-Shirts specially prepared and were not going to hold any punches. The team names were telling on the day...The Billabomz, the Quick and Silver and Salty Surfers clearly backed by our hardcore surfing contingent. Then there were others like LOST, well we nearly did lose them, the Wranglers tried their best to rope in their challengers, and the Megatrons ...not much I can say about that one.

After a briefing by rally master Philip McConney, the teams jostled and bounced for position in the car park, before being sent off in orderly array. The teams head North East in search of those elusive clues and forbidden treasures. A few calls were made as some teams strayed from the ultimate goal. Word is that as time wound down some frantic trades went down in the Barbadian back country. Clues for treasure, treasure for clues, it was every man for themselves, a red crab for a Burkie sticker, a bar of Sex Wax for some ladies hair extensions, our surfing pirates were cut-throat. When the dust settled all teams returned to port, with the exception of one, who was last seen in Jack in the Box Gully. The bounty was counted and a round of Surfers Jeopardy unveiled to test the wits of the most savvy of surfers. The final tally, prizes awarded for the top seven cars:

1st Place – SHOTZ - 1,975 points – Car No. 3
Ametza Nicholls

4th Place – SALTY SURFERS – 1,835 points - Car No. 2

6th PLACE – QUICK & SILVER – 1,787.5 points - Car No. 7

Giselle Allan
Helena Allan

7th Place – BURKIE BASHERS – 1,637.50 points - Car No. 9
Duane Burke
Janice Burke

Ethan Hoyos

Surfers Jeopardy went into a sudden death round with the Salty Surfers, Alan Burke, Josh, Jacob & Jodie Burke along with Annemiek & Dane Mackie locked neck and neck with the Evanators, Simon, Evan and Cameron Moll with Yasmine, Lance and Lee Blades. Tasked with bringing sense to the Jeopardy round, BJSC representative Gregory Rose devised a sudden death question that would task even the guru Burke himself, "the team with the closest width to Andrew Rose's Channel Island Whip". But it was the Salty Surfers to prevail and take home the Cafe Sol vouchers.

A great time was had by all. Pictures to be posted shortly on our Facebook page and Website. Check us out at www.facebook.com/bdosjuniorsurfing/ or http://www.bdosjuniorsurfing.org .
