Bridgetown - Aug 25.
A team of Barbados' junior surfers, in part funded by the Barbados Junior Surfing Club, battled against the heated competition in the Outer Banks of North Carolina at the Rip Curl Grom Search on August 16, 2010. The Grom Search is a series of contests over many regions bringing together the best male and female under 16 surfers from around the world to ultimately find the "best grom" in an international finale.
The Barbados contingent were greeted at Lillian Street in Kitty Hawk by thumping head high beach break. Present to do Barbados and themselves proud were Che Allan and Andrew Rose representing the Under 12s, Josh Galt and Danny Edghill the Under 14 challengers, Under 16 East Coast veteran Jordan Heaselgrave, and our top female surfers Chelsea Roett and Chelsea Tuach. The contestants would be challenged by the conditions with 15 minutes heats starting from the paddle out on the beach, making the selection of quality waves in that short timeframe vital to their success.
At the close of play Barbados' girls would once again make the country proud with Chelsea Tuach in 1st place on the Kitty Hawk podium with 15.5 score total for her best two waves and Chelsea Roett in 2nd place with 12.5 score total. With her win Chelsea Tuach advances to compete in the Grom Search's US final in Puerto Rico in October. Both girls have staked their claim on the US East Coast and have continued their domination at the Ripcurl Grom Search. The Chelseas both advanced directly to the finals with first place finishes in Round One of their division, Chelsea Roett having the day's highest heat score for the girls of 16.16 for her two wave total. Last year roles were reversed with Chelsea Roett as the first place winner in the Rip Curl in New Symrna Beach and Chelsea Tuach placing second. Both advanced to the US finals where Roett finished in overall 3rd place.
New comer to the Rip Curl Grom Search was Danny Edghill, who was a standout performer on the day. Danny brought a complete repertoire of big carves, reverses and airs as he hacked the pounding beachbreak to 2nd place finish in the Under 14 Boys division. Josh Galt also a new comer to the event demonstrated his rapid progress as a competitive surfer with some solid cutbacks and hacks. Despite Galt's equal 17th place finish at this year's event expect to see him on the Rip Curl podium in the very near future.
In the Under 12 Boys division Che Allan would finish equal 5th by advancing straight to semi final one from the day's first heat demonstrating his mature style with solid cutbacks and turns. Also demonstrating his fine form, Andrew Rose slashed the solid beachbreak and would finish equal 13th on the day. Both of these young groms at the event displayed winning form but fell prey to the challenging conditions as the day wore on.
Jordan Heaselgrave would place one of the day's high heat scores of 15.5 in his round one heat of the Under 16 Boys in what the announcers would call the most heated contest of the day. Jordan would show off his repertoire of vertical re-entries and slashes to eliminate the field. Jordan would advance straight to the semi-finals where he finished equal 5th in the division.
A great event was had by all, spectators and competitors alike. The level of surfing in Barbados is progressing at rapid speed and our juniors have shown they can battle against the best at home or abroad. As they continue to expose themselves in international competition expect to see your local names and faces on the surf contest podiums far and afield.

Barbados’ groms head East to battle in BJSC Event # 3 Sponsored by Ashford Dairies

June 12th 2010, East Coast, Barbados:
(Photos compliments of Mark Harris)
Barbados’ hottest groms headed East to contest the third event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s 2010 Burkie Junior Surf Series sponsored by Ashford Dairies. After the swell had all but disappeared on the South the contest moved to the East Coast which still offered up some fun surf for the juniors, and they did not disappoint in entertaining the crowd.
In the premier division the Boys Under 18 Daniel Edghill slashed and hacked his way to a 1st place finish moving himself up into second place in the overall 2010 rankings chasing Joshua Burke who has been dominant in the division throughout the season. Other contenders did not disappoint with second place Jordan Heaselgrave displaying his vertical attack on the small rights, third place Joshua Burke carving and throwing some mean rail grabs, and fourth place Dane Mackie laying down his backside reverses with ease.
In the Club’s youngest division 10& Under Che Allan continued his dominance scoring a hat trick with his third win of the season in a row, and fending off a charge by Andrew Rose, Evan Moll and Zander Venezia who are hungry to stop his streak. In the 12& Under Joshua Burke and Dane Mackie have been jostling for lead position throughout the season but Joshua Burke took contest three and the overall lead laying down the challenge for event four. Lilly von Truenfels continued to dominate the 12 & Under girls with her second win for the season holding off Isabella Venezia who is keeping on the pressure.

The 14 & Under saw the rivalry between Joshua Burke and Dane Mackie continue but Chelsea Tuach with a second place finish behind Joshua Burke in the final now moves Dane Mackie just a few points behind Burke in the overall standings making the last two contests of the year vital in determining this divisions eventual outcome.
The Under 16 division saw Chelsea Tuach edge Chelsea Roett for the win putting her within
reach in the overall standings. The girls continued the battle into the Under 18 Girls division but this time Chelsea Roett bested Chelsea Tuach with her third win in a row for the season and expanded her lead in that division. The day saw a surprise appearance from Milky the Cow visiting from the Barbados Dairy and Beef Producers Association and sponsor Ashford Dairies. The juniors bulked up on milk packs in various flavors to provide the added strength for their finals. Milky did not disappoint posing for a few photos and doing the Milky dance for the kids.
A great day was had by all and we look forward to seeing all at our next event on September 11th at Surfers Point, Christ Church, Barbados – Sponsored by the JADA Group.

JOSHUA BURKE RIPS THE TYPHOON
June 9th, 2010 - Orlando,Florida:
13 year old St Winifred School Student Josh Burke surfed exceptional on Wednesday night at the Quiksilver King Of The Grom qualifying event held at The famous Walt Disney World ,Typhoon Lagoon water park, competing against 30 of the top junior surfers U-16 years old from across the United States and Puerto Rico,Burke was on par with the level of competition, placing 5th and winning The Most Progressive surfer of the event!
Burke recently signed a 2year deal with traction pad giant X-Trak & Magma surf wax and rides the ever faithful Burkie Boards that are shaped and produced by World class shaper Rich Price.
Patrick Schmidt from Manasquan New Jersey wore the crown of the King, the winning wave was a brilliant display of wave riding, taking off right against the pool wall coming off the bottom with a powerful off the top,a nice speed turn in the middle to set up for a huge fluent air reverse 360 on the closeout, literally cementing his place on the throne and a trip to France for the Grandfinal!
Who would think of going to landlock city of Orlando to surf? Matt Kechele, team manager for Quiksilver and organizer of the 2010 KOTG thought of the idea "every year instead of getting an ulcer worrying over if mother nature is going to produce or not,why not have guaranteed waves" Kechele states, and a great idea it was!

The Typhoon Lagoon pushes out a 5ft wave every 90 seconds providing a fair playing field for the young future pro surfers and they did not disappoint, throwing adult type turns, and launching big air reverses on the closeout.Coach for Joshua,Alan Burke says" This was a very unique event, very cool scene, watching the best juniors from the US rip in a pool", "Josh adapted well ,the buoyancy had very little effect but he complained of the visibility of the wave due to the clarity of the water and the reflection from the lights, everyone had to deal with it so it was very fair" Burke states.
Joshua will be taking part in three international events over summer,Rip Curl gromsearch New Smyrna beach,East Coast Surfing Championships,Virginia Beach and The NKF in Cocoa Beach.
