High performance surfing rules at Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Silver Sands Event

June 25th 2011, Silver Sands Resort, CH CH, Barbados:

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club made the call mid Friday, the third event of its Burkie Junior Surf Series would move to Silver Sands Resort, Christ Church, Barbados for the first ever junior surfing event to be held there. The high performance beach break wave would bring out the best maneuvers and the junior surfers stepped to the call. The morning of the event saw a massive tree washed right into the near shore air section and Barbados’s finest groms would have none of this, banded together in a solid team effort they would lasso the offending debris and clear it from their playground. Then the real surfing action could begin.

In the premier Under 18 Open a rampaging Jordan Heaselgrave stamped his claim on the number one spot punctuating the beach break conditions with combinations of vertical reentries and powerful tail slides. As the Club now rounds the midyear schedule and into the final events Jordan puts himself into the running for the overall grand prize chasing new season leader Dane Mackie, who recently sponsored by Lost Enterprises, chucked some massive backside air reverses to the delight of the crowd on the beach. Mackie now leads the rankings over an equally impressive Joshua Burke (sponsored by Billabong, X-Trak, Vonzipper, Nixon and Burkie Boards), who would launch a salvo of front side air reverses throughout the day of the competition. Burke would finish third on the day and now steps back into second place overall for the year followed by the ever powerful Daniel Edghill whose aerial repertoire and massive rooster tails of spray would displace much of the Atlantic Ocean and any patches of seaweed that dared get in his way.

Moving onto the youngest of our groms, the 10 & Under division was neck and neck with Jacob Burke and Zander Venezia tied for first overall heading into event 3. The division was witness to the closest finish between the top two competitors with mere 0.06 of a point difference in the judges’ score line, but Jacob Burke would take the top spot with his front side hacks and one of the most spectacular barrels of the day. Zander Venezia now steps a few points back in the ratings with his second place finish but definitely not out of reach, with his man-sized tail-slides we expect a close competition between the two to the finish line. Young Caleb Rapson making his debut final in a BJSC event would place third overall and advance into the top four in the overall ranking. He is now chasing Yuri Scutt whose fourth place finish on the day advances his third place stake in the overall rankings. There is great rising talent in our youngest division and they show no hesitation whether it be paddling out into waist high South Point or chucking themselves over the steep faces of Soup Bowl, Darrian Pitcher, Liam Grant and Riley Evelyn are some of the young groms making a charge for the future of surfing and there is a deep talent pool rising alongside them. Keep posted as there will be developments.

Che Allan would regain his momentum in the 12 & Under division race with a victory in event three. The Quiksiilver sponsored Allan would display great top to bottom surfing and pull off some speedy floaters on the sectioned beach break to advance his overall lead in the division. Andrew Rose showcased his wide repertoire of maneuvers whether seeking the barrel or launching into the air to a second place finish on the day and continues his challenge of Allan in second place overall in the divisional rankings. Jacob Burke with a third place finish on the day still remains in the running with Allan and Rose for the overall title as we head down the stretch, followed by Zander Venezia who placed fourth on the day.

The 14 & Under division was won by Dane Mackie who now increases his lead in the division over the second placed Joshua Burke. We said it before but it needs to be said again, the two groms set new levels for the rising juniors developing behind them with an aerial assault on Silver Sands beach break. Jostling for first and second in the division we expect the battle for the overall title will be unsettled until the final horn of December’s event five. Andrew Rose would take third place in the division and move into the top four of the overall rankings. Josh Galt who made a statement with his vertical backside reentries and front side hacks would finish fourth on the day.
The Under 16 division title race would get very close in the mid year hump, a semi final elimination for Daniel Edghill would see the rating leader knocked back to third place overall in the rankings. Dane Mackie would take top prize in event three with Joshua Burke second however the two are now tied for the overall lead with Edghill in firing distance. Che Allan would take third and solidify his place in the top four overall, and 9 year old Zander Venezia would make his debut final in the Under 16 this year showing the older groms that he is ready to make his charge amongst them.

The Under 18 Girls would see the challenge between Chelsea Roett and Chelsea Tuach continue for the top spot overall. The two girls controlled the heat with Tuach throwing her front side slashes and Roett countering with her vertical backside approach, however it was Tuach who would seize this day with a win but still trails overall rating leader Roett heading into the final events. Vying for the future girls crown were Isabella Venezia who charged the beach break conditions for the third place finish and Gylla Mackenzie who finished a mere 0.03 points behind Venezia in fourth. These young ladies are all well on their way to be future leaders of the division.
The Club now has a lull through summer before its next event the BJSC Family Fun Day on October 22nd 2011. However, there will be no rest for its junior surfers as a number of our young shining stars as the Club will in part fund a contingent of juniors heading to the United States to attend the Rip Curl Grom Search in New Smyrna, Florida and Outer Banks, North Carolina; East Coast Surf Championships in Virginia Beach; as well as the NKF Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The Club is proud to assist in the development of these young stars and wishes them success in their journey.
