Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Jammin Cruises sponsored Long Beach event battles the elements for some great surfing

November 12th 2011, Long Beach, CH CH, Barbados:

The winds blasted every effort to set up tents, then the torrential rains battered competitors and officials alike, everyone huddling under the only available cover. These were the conditions that marked the fourth event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series sponsored by Jammin Cruises. Surfers relish in Mother Nature’s gifts and take the good with the bad and that is exactly what the Club’s juniors would set about doing. It has been a while since the last event surfing event has been held at Long Beach and the Club’s efforts to expose the competitors to a range of waves and conditions would bring out the best in each juniors’ performances no matter how Mother Nature could challenge them.

As the judges hid behind rows of umbrellas to keep the rain squalls at bay the Under 18 Open would hit the water. The difficult beach break conditions would be slashed and hacked by the Lost Enterprises sponsored Dane Mackie who would win the division with an 8.97 two wave total over second place Joshua Burke (Billabong, X-Trak, Vonzipper, Nixon, Futures Fins and Burkie Boards) who finished with a 7.97 two wave total. Third and fourth place would go to Evan Moll and Dylan Downie respectively with 5.97 and 2.57 two wave totals. Mackie now extends his lead over second place Burke in the Under 18 Open standings heading into the final event scheduled for early January. Also maintaining there position for a run at the title at the final event are Daniel Edghill and Chelsea Roett who are third and fourth in the overall rankings.

Moving onto the youngest of our groms, the 10 & Under division would see young Jacob Burke run away with the win and extend his lead in the overall standings. Burke who would stylishly carve and blast the end sections of every wave would finish with a 7.00 two wave total followed by Darrian Pitcher who would have a solid second place result to further his 2011 divisional campaign with a 4.20 wave total; third and fourth in the division were Zander Venezia and Yuri Scutt. Burke leads the overall standings heading into event 5 in January followed by Zander Venezia and Yuri Scutt. The contingent of the Club’s youngest groms is rapidly developing and the performance levels are rising exponentially we look forward to seeing what this class of juniors will bring to the international competition stage in the next few years.

Che Allan would again take the 12 & Under win to cement his standing in the race for the overall title. In a close fought battle that would see the goofyfooter exchange flowing re-entries to the shore break with second place Jacob Burke’s hacks and massive blast off the end section, Allan would finish with a 8.40 two wave total and Burke with 7.57 followed by Zander Venezia (4.67) and Evan Moll (4.13) in third and fourth respectively. Mathematically the division remains open heading into the last event with Che Allan, Jacob Burke and Andrew Rose all possible contenders for the crown, however Allan’s win has put sufficient distance between him and the other two contenders to make their end game indeed daunting.

The 14 & Under division was won by Dane Mackie (8.50) who now increases his lead in the division over the second placed Joshua Burke (5.60). The two groms have continually put on exciting performances with their progressive fins free and aerial assaults at every event this year. They continue to be bright beacons leading the way for all our juniors. Repeat finalists on the day who continued to shine in the challenging conditions were third place Evan Moll (3.33) and fourth Dylan Downie (3.17). Downie would notch another finals placing in the Under 16 Division, his third of third event, finishing fourth (3.07). The roles reversed between the super groms and Joshua Burke (6.23) would take the Under16 Division over close rival Dane Mackie (6.07) with Che Allan finishing in third (5.13). Burke leads the overall Under 16 standings heading down the stretch with Mackie and Allan still vying to topple him for the year end prize!

The Under 18 Girls would see Chelsea Roett take the overall win and the 2010 Under 18 Girls winner cement the overall division title for the second consecutive year. Finishing in second place was Gylla Mackenzie who gave a great performance to challenge Roett for the win. Absent from the event was Chelsea Tuach who was attending the Pan American Surfing Games in Guadeloupe. Both Roett and Tuach have been taking their talent to the world stage with both girls finishing equal 5th in the Rip Curl Grom Search US Finals in early November. We expect more great results from these talented surfers.

The Club thanks Jammin Cruises as a first time sponsor for our event and supporter of our junior surfers. We also thank the officials, parents and volunteers who weathered the constant rain squalls to make the event a success. Our final event is to be held with a two weekend waiting period either 7-8th or 14th-15th January, we are hopeful of a potential swell to awaken an exciting new location. Keep posted for further information; come and watch the most progressive Bajan groms in the best waves.

In the 4ft choppy conditions,Burke opened up his assault with a flurry of power carves, big off the top hacks combined with a display of carves, slashes and tailslides during the first four rounds of competition that had the crowd cheering and in the semi finals Burke caught a set wave, opened up with a huge off the top flowed into a massive bottom turn to set up for a power carve, throwing the rail wrapping it all the way around to bounce off the whitewater, generating speed rarely seen by a 14 yr old, pumping down the line to unleash the biggest air 180 reverse of the event to post a 9.6 out of a possible perfect 10pts,the highest scoring ride of the event and even had the pro division commentators to pause taking note and advising the 5000 plus spectators to watch "this little kid Josh Burke from Barbados".Burke also competed in the mens pro placing 33rd(84 entries) and in the 15-over/OPEN ( 85 entries) placing 7th..

High performance surfing rules at Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Silver Sands Event

June 25th 2011, Silver Sands Resort, CH CH, Barbados:

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club made the call mid Friday, the third event of its Burkie Junior Surf Series would move to Silver Sands Resort, Christ Church, Barbados for the first ever junior surfing event to be held there. The high performance beach break wave would bring out the best maneuvers and the junior surfers stepped to the call. The morning of the event saw a massive tree washed right into the near shore air section and Barbados’s finest groms would have none of this, banded together in a solid team effort they would lasso the offending debris and clear it from their playground. Then the real surfing action could begin.

In the premier Under 18 Open a rampaging Jordan Heaselgrave stamped his claim on the number one spot punctuating the beach break conditions with combinations of vertical reentries and powerful tail slides. As the Club now rounds the midyear schedule and into the final events Jordan puts himself into the running for the overall grand prize chasing new season leader Dane Mackie, who recently sponsored by Lost Enterprises, chucked some massive backside air reverses to the delight of the crowd on the beach. Mackie now leads the rankings over an equally impressive Joshua Burke (sponsored by Billabong, X-Trak, Vonzipper, Nixon and Burkie Boards), who would launch a salvo of front side air reverses throughout the day of the competition. Burke would finish third on the day and now steps back into second place overall for the year followed by the ever powerful Daniel Edghill whose aerial repertoire and massive rooster tails of spray would displace much of the Atlantic Ocean and any patches of seaweed that dared get in his way.

Moving onto the youngest of our groms, the 10 & Under division was neck and neck with Jacob Burke and Zander Venezia tied for first overall heading into event 3. The division was witness to the closest finish between the top two competitors with mere 0.06 of a point difference in the judges’ score line, but Jacob Burke would take the top spot with his front side hacks and one of the most spectacular barrels of the day. Zander Venezia now steps a few points back in the ratings with his second place finish but definitely not out of reach, with his man-sized tail-slides we expect a close competition between the two to the finish line. Young Caleb Rapson making his debut final in a BJSC event would place third overall and advance into the top four in the overall ranking. He is now chasing Yuri Scutt whose fourth place finish on the day advances his third place stake in the overall rankings. There is great rising talent in our youngest division and they show no hesitation whether it be paddling out into waist high South Point or chucking themselves over the steep faces of Soup Bowl, Darrian Pitcher, Liam Grant and Riley Evelyn are some of the young groms making a charge for the future of surfing and there is a deep talent pool rising alongside them. Keep posted as there will be developments.

Che Allan would regain his momentum in the 12 & Under division race with a victory in event three. The Quiksiilver sponsored Allan would display great top to bottom surfing and pull off some speedy floaters on the sectioned beach break to advance his overall lead in the division. Andrew Rose showcased his wide repertoire of maneuvers whether seeking the barrel or launching into the air to a second place finish on the day and continues his challenge of Allan in second place overall in the divisional rankings. Jacob Burke with a third place finish on the day still remains in the running with Allan and Rose for the overall title as we head down the stretch, followed by Zander Venezia who placed fourth on the day.

The 14 & Under division was won by Dane Mackie who now increases his lead in the division over the second placed Joshua Burke. We said it before but it needs to be said again, the two groms set new levels for the rising juniors developing behind them with an aerial assault on Silver Sands beach break. Jostling for first and second in the division we expect the battle for the overall title will be unsettled until the final horn of December’s event five. Andrew Rose would take third place in the division and move into the top four of the overall rankings. Josh Galt who made a statement with his vertical backside reentries and front side hacks would finish fourth on the day.
The Under 16 division title race would get very close in the mid year hump, a semi final elimination for Daniel Edghill would see the rating leader knocked back to third place overall in the rankings. Dane Mackie would take top prize in event three with Joshua Burke second however the two are now tied for the overall lead with Edghill in firing distance. Che Allan would take third and solidify his place in the top four overall, and 9 year old Zander Venezia would make his debut final in the Under 16 this year showing the older groms that he is ready to make his charge amongst them.

The Under 18 Girls would see the challenge between Chelsea Roett and Chelsea Tuach continue for the top spot overall. The two girls controlled the heat with Tuach throwing her front side slashes and Roett countering with her vertical backside approach, however it was Tuach who would seize this day with a win but still trails overall rating leader Roett heading into the final events. Vying for the future girls crown were Isabella Venezia who charged the beach break conditions for the third place finish and Gylla Mackenzie who finished a mere 0.03 points behind Venezia in fourth. These young ladies are all well on their way to be future leaders of the division.
The Club now has a lull through summer before its next event the BJSC Family Fun Day on October 22nd 2011. However, there will be no rest for its junior surfers as a number of our young shining stars as the Club will in part fund a contingent of juniors heading to the United States to attend the Rip Curl Grom Search in New Smyrna, Florida and Outer Banks, North Carolina; East Coast Surf Championships in Virginia Beach; as well as the NKF Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The Club is proud to assist in the development of these young stars and wishes them success in their journey.

BAJAN INVASION

BARBADOS JUNIOR SURFING CLUB CONTINGENT RAIDS RON JONS SURF FESTIVAL & ROB MACHADO SEASIDE PRO

“The Bajan Invasion” the announcers dubbed it, and for all intents and purposes the junior surfers in part sponsored by the Barbados Junior Surfing Club had taken over the 47th Annual Ron Jons Surf Festival by storm with 5 of the 9 BJSC surfer contingent placing in their respective finals of the event. On the opposite side of the US continent Chelsea Roett was making her mark in the West at the Rob Machado ASP 4-Star Pro Junior, her debut Association of Surfing Professionals event and official launch of her professional surfing career.

Chelsea held the surfing community of Barbados’ collective heart in their mouth as she blasted a last minute wave to score a 4.67 and move on from her first round of the ASP Rob Machado Pro Junior event, prompting announcers to wonder where the Bajan lass arrived from. She would confidentially surf her way through to the semi finals, where she bowed out to eventual event winner Lakey Peterson, and finished equal 7th and making her mark on the ASP World Tour. The event is the first of three stops on the Women’s ASP North America Pro Junior Series where the winner qualifies for the ASP Women’s World Junior Tour. As such the semi final placing will provide Chelsea with a much needed ASP seeding for the future and start off her ASP campaign with a great position.

Over on the East Coast an electric Joshua Burke would stamp his mark on the Men’s Pro division at the Ron Jons Surf Festival. Surfing against seasoned pros Billabong sponsored 14-year old Burke, fresh off a week long training session in Costa Rica with surfing legend and former US Team Coach, Jim Hogan, would combine power turns with progressive airs and reverses to march through the pro rounds. Burke would have double duty surfing between two podiums at the event rushing from one heat to another at the other podium over a mile away. The results would pay off and Joshua would close out his campaign with a 3rd in the Men’s Pro, a 3rd in the Boys 14 & Under as well as an equal 7th semi final berth in the Junior Men’s Under 18.

Not to be outdone Dane Mackie the 13-year old goofy footer would demolish the waist to shoulder high lefts breaking off of Cocoa Beach’s Pier with fluid top turns, tail slides and reverses right through to the inside of the line-up. His performances were on point throughout the three day event and Dane would finish 2nd overall in the Boys 14 & Under division, the highest placing from any of the BJSC contingent of junior boys. Dane would also place =5th in the Junior Men’s division.

The largest contingent of junior representatives were our up and coming Menehunes age group, ranging form age 9-12 these young shredders attempted every age division they could and they impressed both the Club and the event officials attracting exposure from the announcers, surf industry representatives and Florida press alike. Current BJSC 12 & Under division leader, goofy footer Che Allan, would find Cocoa Beach lefts familiar territory as he matched his prior year result with a 3rd place finish in the Ron Jons Menehune 12 & Under division with fellow Bajan grom Andrew Rose also surfing through the tough junior competition in the final to a 4th place finish overall. Che and Andrew, who were the only finalists from this age grouping, would also compete in the Boys 14 & Under and Junior Men’s facing near back to back heats as the days progressed, they would finish equal 5th and 9th respectively in the 14 & Under division and equal 9th and 17th in the Junior Men’s Under 18 respectively.

9- year old Zander Venezia caught the attention of the announcers as he battled his way through the much older Junior Men’s contingent to a solid quarter final finish of =13th, Zander’s dad Louis would comment to the Florida press “I don’t think Zander’s intimidated by the bigger kids. In fact, I think the older kids are intimidated by him. They don’t want to lose to a little kid.” Jacob Burke would also impress with his solid =5th semi final finish in the Menehune 12 & Under. Displaying much of the same technique instilled on him by dad and coach, Alan Burke, which has launched his brother’s professional career, young Burke would excel in the small conditions and demonstrate potential to be a future super star. Evan Moll would also display some big turns in the small beach break surf, however, Evan would finish the event with an equal 17th in the Menehune 12 & Under and Boys 14 & Under. Evan will be attending the Volcom’s VQS Championship in California this week.

The BJSC Girls contingent would surf the southern podium of the Festival at Sheppard Park. Isabella Venezia who was a finalist previously at the Cocoa Beach’s NKF Surf Festival in September 2010 would make a repeat visit to the finals of the Amateur Girls 12 & Under where she would finish 2nd overall. Isabella is leading the charge for the BJSC’s junior girls as the Club seeks the future of Barbados’ female surfing.

Chelsea Tuach has made her mark in international surfing and like her namesake Chelsea Roett is a role model for our young female surfers. Chelsea is familiar with the US East Coast and Cocoa Beach having won the Women’s Pro division at the NKF Surf Festival at Cocoa Beach in August last year. She accompanied BJSC President and Coach, Alan Burke, with Joshua Burke to training in Costa Rica prior to attending the Ron Jons. Chelsea would surf the Women’s Pro to an =equal 5th finish overall.

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club is pleased with the progress of our junior surfers and ecstatic with their performances. The return home was punctuated with a fantastic night out to celebrate at the invitation of Café Sol, with great Mexican food and lively surfing entertainment. The Club congratulates all of its contingent , Chelsea Roett on her fantastic ASP debut, and the up and coming groms for their assault on the Ron Jon Surf Festival. The Club looks forward to assisting and training the future of Barbados’ surfing and hosting a larger team for the targeted summer events the Rip Curl Grom Search, NKF Surf Festival and East Coast Surf Championships.

She will be going head to head with many of the top rising stars in women’s surfing, such as Lakey Peterson, in a 24-competitor junior women’s division with US$10,000 prize purse. The event can be seen live on the 22nd and 23rd April at http://www.robmachadoprojr.com .

For over four decades the Ron Jon Easter Surfing Festival has continued to be a major force in the growth of surfing on the East Coast of the United States, and the event is the second oldest, most diverse and publicized event of its type giving the Club’s junior surfers great opportunity to prove themselves competitively on the international stage and gain the necessary exposure throughout the surfing community. Leading this squad will be event veterans including Joshua Burke, who was recently sponsored by Billabong and finished 2nd in the 14 & Under and Under 18 Divisionsat last years festival; Dane Mackie who finished 1st in the 12 & Under, 3rd in the 14 & Under and 5th in the Under 18; Chelsea Tuach who finished 5th in the Open Womens; Che Allan who finished 3rd in the 12 & Under; and Jacob Burke who finished 5th in the 12 & Under at the 46th annual Ron Jons Surf Festival in 2010. Jordan Heaselgrave and Evan Moll notch finals time in Volcom's Catfish Series in Puerto Rico

March 19th -20th, 2011 Aviones, Puerto Rico Two of our young local shredders, Jordan Heaselgrave and Evan Moll, made their way to Puerto Rico for the Volcom Catfish Series event on March 19th - 20th. Jordan would slash his way through the Junior Division to a 6th place overall finals finish. Young grom Evan Moll would maul Aviones to place 4th in the Groms division and be invited to the finals in California in May. Congrats guys!! As taken from the Volcom site ..."we arrived early Saturday morning to the sound of pouring rain and howling wind. So we zipped our raincoats, had a little pep talk and got to work. As the rain passed it was time to kick-off the Catfish surf series at Aviones in beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico with fun 3-5 foot surf. The competitors mobbed the sign up tent and when it was all said and done we were left with about 150 competitors ready to battle it out for the prizes, cash, and valuable VQS Champs qualifying spots. The first day went off without a hitch with warm weather and great surf. The kids made it rain ketchup and mayonnaise all over the beach as the competitors chewed their way through the first rounds in all divisions. Here are some of day one standouts: In the Pro-am division Nick Rupp made quick work with a couple of 8’s and some crazy man-child turns. Lief Engstrom all the way from Long Island, NY was going huge and with big frontside air reverse early and looked to be in the running for the Electric Volt Thrower Move of the event. Day two was epic, but with conditions a little more challenging, the competitors had their work cut out for them. Here are some of the standouts from the finals. The Squids division was amazing, these little dudes were all about the fun and didn’t even care that they were competing. Jorge Martinez proved worthy of the victory getting up on his own and cruising with style and grace. The Girls division had three first round heats jam packed with talent. When the fat lady sang it was Maria Kusmovich who beat out the competition and sealed her spot at VQS champs. The Groms in PR are at another level. This was easily one of the closest finals to go down this season. Billy Mcgarry and Mauricio Diaz battled like no other and in the end Billy couldn’t find the back-up he needed and left the door open for Mauricio, who would grab the win and a grip of goodies. The Juniors division was a one man show from the mini human Noah Schwiezer. He took the early lead and never looked back as he scooped up the $250.00 provided by Muscle Milk in the process. The Pro-Am division was loaded with talent from all over the East Coast, having 12 first round heats of competition. However, local hero Brian Toth stepped up in the final and left the beach $2,000.00 richer. Dane Mackie and Burkie Bros shine at Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Second Event

March 26th 2011, South Point, CH CH, Barbados:

A promising East swell filled in to South Point for the second event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series sponsored by Tile Gallery. The junior event shifted location from what was to be dane mackie 3the Club’s first event at North Point to the opposite side of the island to take advantage of the great surf on tap at a familiar break to all the junior shredders. From a field of 30 junior surfers a number of familiar faces would stomp their mark on the final four of each division but some shifting in the ranks between contenders would be the order of the day as it was the day for Mackie and the Burkie Bros to shine.

In the Under 18 Open, Dane Mackie, who was electric on the day in his familiar home turf would out pace the field of finalists to earn the #1 spot on the BJSC’s premier league podium. The younjacob burke 2g goofy footer Mackie would slay the Point’s long chest high left with his vertical fins free attack to the loud cheers from the crowd on hand. The margin between second and fourth place was narrow as other familiar names in the division battled it out. With only 0.74 points between them the lone female finalist Chelsea Tuach would take second on the podium with Daniel Edghill and the ratings leader, Joshua Burke, in third and fourth respectively. The win launches Dane Mackie into second overall in the U18 Open rankings hot on the heels of Burke with only 70 points between them heading into the BJSC’s next event.

But it was another Burke name to shine brightly at South Point on the day as young Jacob “Manrat” Burke would take both the 10 & Under and 12 & Under divisions with solid front side slashes and vertical backside reos. Jacob launched his attack from the first wave of the 10 josh burke & Under final scoring the heat’s highest wave score and from that point could not be caught by the other finalists. Finishing second was the winner of the Club’s first event, Zander Venezia, and rising stars Yuri Scutt and Darrian Pitcher in third and fourth respectively. With two wins and two seconds between them Burke and Venezia now share the top spot in the division rankings.

Jacob would also rise on top of a close fought battle in the 12 & Under division where he would take down the division leader, and recurrent finalist, Che Allan, and third place Andrew Rose with only 0.56 waveandrew rose score between them, Evan Moll would finish fourth having just returned from a finals berth in the Volcom Catfish Series in Puerto Rico.

The 14 & Under finals witnessed the narrowest margin of victory with Josh Burke edging Dane Mackie on a wave count back after a tied heat. With both competitors logging a two wave total of 12.50, Burke’s highest wave score of 7.67 earned him the division’s number one spot followed by Mackie, Che Allan and Daniel Edghill. Burkes aggressive hacks and aerial assault in the South Point theatre would also elevate him against the field of Under 16 competitors. The che allan judges were rewarding the junior surfers who displayed the most vertical and progressive turns and Burke fit the bill. He would take the top spot over Daniel Edghill and move within 130 points of Edghill in the overall division rankings, third and fourth would belong to Dane Mackie and Che Allan respectively.

The Under 18 Girls would see familiar faces in their final ranks. Ratings leader Chelsea Roett would take her second win for the year displaying great flow between her backside hacks on the Point’s walls. Roett now extends her lead but is not out of striking distance from namesake Chelsea Tuach whochelsea roett follows close behind with two second place finishes for the season. Our younger girls and future flag bearers for Barbados’ female surfers, Isabella Venezia and Chelsie Grant, would finish third and fourth on the day. Isabella “Bella” would also take the top of the podium in the Under 12 Girls and lead the division in the Club’s series over second place Giselle Allan and Morgan Rice.

The Club now has a few weeks to wait before its next event the Family Fun Day on May 7th 2011. However, there will be no rest for its junior surfers as a number of the Club’s young shining stars will be featuring chelsea tuach in the Ron Jon Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach, Florida from 22-24th April as well as representing Barbados in the Barbados Surfing Association team heading to the ISA World Junior Championships in Peru on May 21st-29th 2011. Our very own Chelsea Roett who is launching her bid on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Junior Tour has been granted entry to attend the 4 Star Rob Machado Hurley Reef Junior Pro event in California at the end of April. The Club wishes those juniors great success - Ron Jons Surf Festival : Joshua Burke, Dane Mackie, Che Allan, Andrew Rose, Jacob Burke, Zander Venezia, Chelsea Tuach and Isabella Venezia; ISA World Junior Championships: Joshua Burke, Dane Mackie , Daniel Edghill, Che Allan, Caelum Blandford, Chelsea Tuach and Chelsea Roett; Rob Machado ASP 4 Star: Chelsea Roett.

Barbados Junior Surfing Club hits 2011 running with its Lynch Insurance Brokers event

February 12th 2011, Brandens/Drill Hall, CH CH, Barbados:

Barbados’ hottest groms assembled at Brandens/Drill Hall for the Lynch Insurance Brokers sponsored first Barbados Junior Surfing Club – Burkies Junior Surf Series event of 2011. The conditions were windy and choppy at times but some great waves were available, lining up at the famous left break, and these waves were taken to task by the junior shredders.

As the Club kicked off its 2011 season and the young groms battled in the water BJSC President, Mr. Alan Burke, offered an optimistic outlook for the Club which is looking forward to an outstanding year. Interest in surfing is increasing exponentially among young athletes in Barbados, The Club now has approximately 70 junior members, and the levels of surfing performance are through the roof. Coupled with the Barbados Surfing Association there are 17 surfing events between the two organizations who are both focusing on the next waves of junior talent in Barbados. “With such a focus on nurturing the juniors through a competitive environment there is unprecedented progress with many of our young surfers competing at international levels,” said Burke.

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s goal again this year is to send its team to various international contests starting with the Ron Jons Surf Festival on April 22nd – 24th and then onto the summer events on the US East Coast including the Rip Curl Grom Search, NKF Surf Festival and the largest event on the Eastern seaboard the East Coast Surf Championships. As Burke outlines “it is necessary for our juniors to get international exposure to develop competitively and attract potential sponsors to carry their surfing to the next level.” The groms were fulfilling their end of the bargain by mauling the left break to the delight of the beach spectators on the beach who were enjoying the festival atmosphere and show in the water.

In the premier division the Under 18 Open, Joshua Burke edged Daniel Edghill for the 1st place finish, both young chargers displaying an impressive repertoire of modern fins free surfing, hacks and airs. The finalists had to contend with a few non-competitors who entered the contest area before being alerted and instructed to move on. However despite the brief incident the junior contenders did not disappoint, the girls Chelsea Roett and Chelsea Tuach lay down an impressive performance to hold their own against the boys and cemented third place and fourth place respectively, followed by Dane Mackie and Jordan Heaselgrave completing the field of finalists.

The girls continued their long term friendship and rivalry into the new season with 16 year old Chelsea Roett besting 15 year old Chelsea Tuach with her first win for the season in the Under 18 premiere Girls division, the up and coming youngsters 12 year old Isabella Venezia and Chelsie Grant rounded out the girls finalists.

In the Club’s youngest division 10& Under Zander Venezia took top honors fending off second placed Jacob Burke. There is a wave of fresh new talent in the division Yuri Scutt and Axe Garrett placed third and fourth in the finals with Liam Grant and Darrian Pitcher taking equal fifth. It is impressive to see the development of the youngest competitors who are progressing rapidly, their love for the sport unrivalled.

In the 12& Under Che Allan, the young goofy-footer relished in the fast moving lefts demonstrating his speed and flow to take top spot over the regular footer Andrew Rose, who mounted a charge and a some impressive backside hacks late in the heat. Evan Moll and Jacob Burke took third and fourth spot in the final respectively, followed by Zander Venezia and Axe Garrett in equal fifth.

Dane Mackie, another speedy goofy footer would capitalize on the lefts with his patented carve and capture the prize over regular footers Daniel Edghill and Joshua Burke in the 14 & Under with Che Allan, who would feature in three of the event’s finals, rounding out the top four. Andrew Rose and Nicholas O’Neal placed equal fifth on the day in the division.

Finally in the Under 16 Boys would see Daniel Edghill take the prize followed by Dane Mackie, Joshua Burke and Che Allan completing the field of finalists. Chelsea Tuach and Caelum Blandford would finish equal fifth respectively.

The cards are in the air and the new season could belong to any one of the juniors. A fantastic day of surfing and fun on the beach was had by all and the Club is excited about what the year has to offer both in Barbados and abroad. The next BJSC event is to be held on March 26th 2011 at North Point, Barbados, a final call on the location will be provided closer to event date. The Club welcomes competitors both from Barbados, the Caribbean and abroad to join and attend its series of events, see you on the Beach in sunny Barbados.

BARBADOS JUNIOR SURFING CLUB KICKS OFF 2011 YEAR WITH LYNCH EVENT

The Barbados Junior Surfing Club kicks off its 2011 BJSC Burkie Junior Surf Series with its first event sponsored by Lynch Insurance Brokers Ltd. this Saturday 12th February 2011 at Brandens Beach/Drill Hall, Christ Church. According to BJSC President, Mr. Alan Burke, the Club is looking towards an outstanding year. Interest in surfing is increasing exponentially among young athletes in Barbados and the levels of surfing performance are through the roof. As Burke outlines “it is necessary for our juniors to get international exposure to develop competitively and attract potential sponsors to carry their surfing to the next level.” The Barbados Junior Surfing Club has attracted a number of local sponsors without whom the activities of the Club to train and develop the juniors in a competitive forum would be impossible. One such supporter includes the Lynch Insurance Brokers Ltd. who sponsors the first event of the Series this weekend. According to director of Lynch, Mr. Gregory Rose, “Lynch shares the vision of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club to develop the youth of Barbados through sporting and academic forums.” He goes on “We are pleased with the progress the Club is making and the great results demonstrated in the local and international contests in the past year, we are proud to continue our support of this worthy initiative in 2011 and beyond.” The Club welcomes all interested junior surfers to its first event on Saturday. Burke says “it promises to be an exceptional event, we are excited about this year and looking forward to major successes competitively for all our members both locally and internationally.”
