Barbados’ groms battle for rankings in Fujitsu sponsored 2010 season finale
December 11th 2010, Brandens Beach, Christ Church, Barbados:
The Junior surfers arrived at Brandens Beach to idyllic clean surf, however the promised east swell would deteriorate throughout the day. Nevertheless there was an air about the proceedings as the groms chomped at their bits, eager to finish their 2010 season strong, and the surf would be no obstacle. So commenced the final event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series sponsored by Fujitsu Barbados the third largest IT Company in the world and the region's largest IT Services Provider.
In the premier division the Under 18 Boys, Joshua Burke would take the win with a speedy assault on the quickly diminishing surf. Dane Mackie and Daniel Edghill who were breathing down young Burke’s neck through the home stretch would finish second and third at the event and just miss out on the coveted Championship.
In the Under 18 Girls a dominant Chelsea Roett would be victorious and have the distinction of being the only competitor in the Club to have won all five events in a particular division for the year. Chelsea Tuach and Isabella Venezia would finish in second and third respectively. Both Chelseas have been impressive both in regional and international competition this year. It was pleasing to see a strong turnout of girls at this last event, it was one of the largest fields of junior girl contestants for the year. One of the Club’s particular aims is to foster the competitive development of our junior girls and enjoy the international success for which the Chelseas are true ambassadors.
In the youngest division the 10 & Under (Menehune) Division, a rampaging Che Allan who had been in fine form on Brandens’ famous lefts all day, took the win in this division. Andrew Rose and Jacob Burke would finish both the event with second and third place respectively. As the senior competitors in the division Allan and Rose will not be age eligible for the 10 & Under in 2011 opening the door for a new crop of young surfers. We look forward to fielding the next wave of surfing talent and developing our future champions.
In the 12 & Under Division Joshua Burke would finish with a win. A strong showing by Che Allan netted him second place result with Dane Mackie who was chasing Burke for the overall championship finishing third. Che would also upset the 14 & Under field with an event win and bring to a halt the aspirations of any competitors hoping to amass enough points to pass 14 & Under rankings leader Josh Burke. Dane Mackie would finish second to Allan in the 14 & Under with Joshua Burke placing third.
Chelsea Tuach would take the win in the Under 16 division with Joshua Burke placing second. Season leader Chelsea Roett would get third place in the event and Daniel Edghill who was chasing the division leader Chelsea Roett coming into the last event would take fifth in the event.
In the 12&Under Girls Isabella Venezia would eliminate the field and take the overall title with Alex Cole in second place and Gylla Mackenzie in third. Isabella has made marked improvements through the year facing the Chelseas in the more advanced age groups.
All in all event five of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series was a fantastic success. It was fantastic to see the return of some past competitors and the inclusion of new competitors such as Chelsie Grant,(another Chelsie), Morgan Rice, Alex and Vanya Cole, Melanie Grant, Maria Huapaya, Kayla and Maleah Archer, Seth and Riley Evelyn, Liam Grant, and Ryan Hough. The Club thanks the main event sponsor Fujitsu Barbados for their commitment to junior surfing in Barbados.
In 2010 we have been witness to major improvements in Barbados’ junior surfing. There has been significant development in the technical and competitive abilities of our surfers through structured surfing events and training. The junior surfers have competed both locally and internationally and reaped success in all events. We assisted in fielding a 12 person contingent to four junior events on the US East Coast including the Rip Curl Grom Search New Smyrna, Rip Curl Grom Search Outer Banks, the East Coast Surf Championships and the NKF Surf Festival. Two surfers Dane Mackie and Chelsea Tuach would go on to represent at the Rip Curl US National Finals in Puerto Rico. The Barbados Junior Surfing Club has been pleased to play a role in this development and looks forward to continued interest from the present junior surfing community and welcomes all newcomers to participate in its programmes. The Club thanks its Major sponsors during the year Lynch Insurance Brokers, Tile Gallery, Ashford Dairies, the JADA Group, Fujitsu Barbados and Hough Capital Management. We would also like to thank Sprite and Williams Equipment without their commitment our mission would not be possible.
We reflect on the achievements of 2010 and look forward to building on these through 2011 for the future of surfing in Barbados.
