South Point showcases Barbados’ junior surfing talent at BJSC Event Two

June 9th 2012, South Point CH CH, Barbados:

Dane Mackie
To the disdain of many loyal South Point locals the swell forecast could not have been much better for the second event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club Burkie Junior Surf Series. The day opened with a salvo of head high sets that would cause the event organizers to switch earlier plans to run the younger groms first. As such the Under 16 and Under 18 surfers had first dibs on the juicy spoils of the swell, and did not disappoint, blasting the lined up peaks with fans of spray and huge air rotations to the delight of the crowd on hand.

In the premier Under 18 Open, Dane Mackie (Lost Enterprises, Arnette, Digicel), would back up his season opening victory with another first place finish to solidify his lead and stranglehold on the division title heading into the final series event.. Mackie would post a 11.30 average two wave total over Chelsea Roett who averaged 10.10 to finish second and open the battle of the runners up heading into the third and final event. Dane attacked his favorite home break with flare connecting the long lefts with a series of blow tails into aggressive front side fins free reverses, Chelsea would connect with a series of vertical backhand snaps. Also in the hunt for valuable series points were Josh Burke (Billabong, X-Trak, Reef, Lime, Von Zipper, Nixon, Future Fins, Burkie Boards) who would blow the tail on his back hand and volley into a few front side airs but still fall short of the score needed finishing third with 8.14 just ahead of young Andrew Rose (Volcom, Arnette, Burkie Boards) who placed fourth with 7.88 who would notch a few above the lip turns of his own to keep up with the older groms.

Chelsea Roett
The Under 18 Girls would see the top female rider Chelsea Roett (Oakley, Lime) extend her domination for the top spot overall with another win in the division.  Roett would command the entire heat over her younger counterparts with her vertical approach and aggressive snaps. Rising young star Jodie Burke seeking her share of her brother’s spotlight would stamp her claim in both her finals on the day with a second place in the U18 Girls followed by newcomer to the surf competition arena Olivia Warden who would take third and make a solid start.  Also vying for the future girls crown were Gabriella Gittens who showing  immense promise at 10 years old and developing rapidly and Morgan Rice who maybe in her last Series appearance would make two finals appearances with a fifth in the older division.

In the youngest division the 10 & Under groms, Zander Venezia (Hurley, Dragon, Dakine, Lazy Days) would take a first place finish on the day controlling the final with fluid snaps and cutbacks. With his second victory in the series Zander now controls his destiny heading into the series finale. Making his series debut for the year was Axe Garrett who would  execute some great turns to the inside and notch a second place result, followed by Charlie Jenkins in third and Caleb Rapson in fourth. The divisions youngest charger 7 year old Matteo Capasso pleased the crowd with some grab rail free falls finishing =5th alongside Darrian Pitcher rounding out the Club’s future stars of Barbados.

Che Allan
Che Allan (Quiksilver, Dragon) would edge Andrew Rose (Volcom, Arnette, Burkie Boards) for another victory in the 12 & Under. The goofyfooter Allan would connect the lefts with his flashy fins free turns to sweeping carves and Rose finishing second would favor the short rights on his front hand launching blow tails and taking to the air. Jacob Burke (RVCA, Dakine, Indo Board, Burkie Boards) would display great form with his carves and critical hits to take third over Zander Venezia (Hurley, Dragon) who was fourth and Jaedon Brancker who made his debut finals appearance and promises to shine in a few more.

The Under 16 final would be another high performance display between six of Barbados’ finest groms to the excitement of all standing on South Point’s rocky outcrop. In what would be one of the highest scoring heats of the day with all posting great rides and progressive turns Dane Mackie would shine again to lock a narrow victory over rival and friend Josh Burke. The rising young stars Che Allan and Andrew Rose would finish third and fourth raking in valuable series points, and rounding the field were Josh Galt and Evan Moll in fifth and sixth place.

Jodie Burke
The 12 & Under Girls would see the return of Jodie Burke in fine form and delivering victory for a commanding series lead. Morgan Rice would execute a few long rides of her own and take home silver on the day. Newcomer Olivia Warden would finish in third for her second bronze medal of the day. The youngest girl groms would post great scores of their own in what a close final between them, merely 0.7 average wave score between 4th and 6th. However it was Roma Bellori in 4th, Gabriella Gittens in 5th and Giselle Allan finishing in 6th on the day.

Zander Venezia
As part of the Club’s new focus in 2012 the next event to be held on the 17th June is an expression session to showcase the high performance surfing of the top groms. These events promise to challenge our groms to execute their best maneuvers whilst also exploring new locations on our islands shores. Part adventure, part fun, part progression we want to push the envelope of surfing in Barbados with exciting new events this year. We look forward to debuting the video from this inaugural event and following this up with many more. Our next series event is to be held in October 20th following a summer where many of our groms are attending a wide range of regional and international competitions as well as surf camps. We wish everyone a great summer and see you on the beach real soon!

Barbados Junior Surfing Club kicks of 2012 Series - Mackie & Roett shine in Premier Divisions

March 17, Silver Sands Beach, CH CH, Barbados:

There was no tree in the lineup this time, but Silver Sands Beach held its promise and the waves delivered for a successful start to the 2012 Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series contests. Following on the first successful event to be held at the location in 2011 the contest director made the call based on a shifting East swell and the junior surfers got to demonstrate their abilities in the high performance beach break. The first event of the 2012 season was sponsored by longstanding supporter of the Club and surfing in Barbados Lynch Insurance Brokers, and the turnout on the contest day was outstanding with many new faces to the sport, their families, and supporters showing that the sport of surfing in Barbados is more vibrant than ever.

In the premier Under 18 Open, Dane Mackie (Lost Enterprises, Arnette, Jada), who has been on a roll lately taking three of the Club’s 2011 titles, and started the year with another divisional three-peat at the Barbados Surfing Association’s first event of 2012, would come out blazing to take the win in the division and start his 2012 campaign year on a solid note. Mackie would post a 10.60 two wave total over Josh Burke (Billabong, Von Zipper, Nixon, X-Trak, Reef, Future Fins, Reef, Burkie Boards) with a 7.00 who would take second. The groms would trade off an exhibition in fins free flare in their quest to dominate the opening of the series. Not to be out done Che Allan who would feature in three of the event’s finals would attack the beach break’s left with a vengeance and post a two wave total of 6.00 to finish 3rd over the lone female finalist Chelsea Tuach with 5.43 and a 4th place result.

The Under 18 Girls would see the challenge for top female rider between Chelsea Roett (Oakley, Lime) and Chelsea Tuach (Roxy, Red Bull, 69 Slam, Dragon) enter a new year for the top spot overall. The two girls controlled the heat with Tuach throwing her front side slashes and Roett countering with her vertical approach, however it was Roett who would seize this day with a win and divisional lead. Vying for the future girls crown were Gylla Mackenzie who would take 3rd and rising new junior girls riders Gabriella Gittens 4th and Valentine Meniaud 5th starting their first year on the series and developing to take the future reins of the division.

In the youngest division the 10 & Under groms, Zander Venezia would take control of the season with a first place finish on the day. Venezia, who was recently signed by US based surf company Hurley, would dominate the final with some solid hacks followed by Caleb Raspon in 2nd who would link some nice cutbacks through to the inside of the challenging beach break Darrian Pitcher would take 3rd in the division and Charlie Jenkins making his first event final and starting his run for the 2012 divisional podium would finish 4th. The division would also see some new faces and young talent entering the competitive arena this year including Matteo Capasso, Cesar Meniaud, Ayden Vido and Joshua Tempro. It is great to see the pure stoke in these youngsters and we look forward to bearing witness to their progress in the years to come.

Che Allan (Quiksilver) would kick off his season with a narrow victory in the 12 & Under over Andrew Rose (Volcom, Arnette, Burkie Boards). Allan would demonstrate great flow linking his quick fins free turns through to the inside for a 7.33 two wave total, whereas Rose would get the heat’s highest wave score landing one of the event’s few airs and finishing just short with a 7.10 two wave total and second place. Evan Moll would launch a flurry of vertical re-entries and take 3rd place with a 6.40 two total followed by Zander Venezia (5.20) in 4th, Jacob Burke (RVCA, Indo Board, Burkie Boards) in 5th (4.97) and Yuri Scutt in 6th (3.30). The 12 & Under division would also grow through new competitive interest in the sport. Some of the very young competitors would pitch their skills up against the older boy, but new faces like Zachary Cook, Andrew Gill, Christian Armstrong and Kobi Talma would all make debut starts in 2012.

The Under 16 division title race would kick off with Joshua Burke staking his claim on the 2012 divisional lead with another fins free and aerial exhibition finishing with a 9.60 two wave total over Andrew Rose (6.10) who was solid throughout the event finishing second and making a solid run for 2012. Josh Galt would only finish narrowly behind Rose (6.03) and also takes home valuable points for his divisional run with Che Allan finishing 4th (3.93) on the day.
Finally the 12 & Under Girls would start the year with many new faces to the Club. Jodie Burke not to be outdone by her brothers would stake her own claim on the Barbados surf arena with a win in event one. Burke who like her brothers and father can be found surfing most evenings would make her competitive debut and commence with a bang. Last year’s divisional winner Giselle Allan who also is making her own name in the sport and charting a similar path of success to brother Che would finish 2nd on the day. Gabriella Gittens and Valetine Meniaud who were repeat finalists for both girls divisions would take 3rd and 4th respectively with Roma Bellori last year’s divisional runner up finishing 5th, and Melanie Massey 6th.

The Club has shifted its focus in 2012 by adding variety to our contest schedule and limiting our Burkie Junior Surf Series events to three prime events this year. Our goal is to provide our juniors with a broader competitive experience by adding some expression session events to showcase our surfers’ most progressive maneuvers, provide some training events to enhance their development and prepare them for overseas competition, and add to our Family Fun Day events that always bring the joy of surfing to new faces and great a great environment to share the love of the sport with kids and their families. Our first event of the year, sponsored by Lynch Insurance Brokers, has been a great success brining many new junior members into the sport and we hope to build on this success through 2012. See you at our next event the BJSC Family Fun Day to be held on May 5th 2012 at Surfers Point, Inch Marlow, Christ Church, Barbados.

Barbados Junior Surfing Club closes 2011 series at South Point, Dane Mackie scores hat trick and Chelsea Roett finishes impressive season!

January 29th 2012, South Point, Barbados:

Barbados’ hottest groms took to South Point for the fifth and final event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s 2011 Burkie Junior Surf Series. The Club’s final event was to be mobile and was hopeful of a North swell to host a new event location much like the Friars Well event of 2010. The swell did not materialize in what has been a quiet season for our island’s West coast, but relocation of the event to South Point did not disappoint, and the waves were firing for our young groms.

In the Club’s premier division, the Under 18 Open, Dane Mackie (Lost Enterprises, Arnette, Jada) was charging at his home break. Comfortable in the conditions does not adequately describe the goofy footer’s onslaught against South Point’s reeling lefts, Dane demonstrated a progressive repertoire of maneuvers, hacks, airs and reverses on route to a 1st place finish and clean up of three divisions, in particular a prestigious overall victory in the premier division Under 18 Open. Joshua Burke (Billabong, X-Trak, Vonzipper, Nixon, Reef, Futures Fins and Burkie Boards) who was chasing Mackie down to the wire in the overall ratings would take a second place finish on the day, and second place overall for the season. Burke was also electric on the day and to the delight of the spectators threw himself into a number of technical air reverses on the Point’s puntable rights. Chelsea Roett (Oakley, Lime) would demonstrate her great skill, not just as a top female rider, but a top caliber junior surfer that can mix it up with any group of surfing talent, Roett launched a furious backside attack on the Point’s lefts to take home the bronze and a fourth place overall finish in the Under 18 Open division. Daniel Edghill would also showcase his talent heaving gallons of water with his patented hack and taking to the air with ease, Edghill would take the fourth place finish on the day and the bronze in the division overall.

In the Girls Under 18 division Chelsea Roett would close out an impressive year with her fourth win in the division for a fantastic season finish. Roett would finish with an 11 average two wave total with Chelsea Tuach (Roxy, Red Bull, 69Slam, Dragon)finishing in second with a 9.1 average two wave total and closing the year in second overall. Gylla Mackenzie who is leading the charge for the next generation of young female groms, would cap her year with a third on the day and overall, with newcomers to the division mini girl groms Roma Bellori and Giselle Allan taking their skills to the old guard and finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

In the Club’s youngest division the10&Under a back and forth battle throughout the year between two young stars, Jacob Burke (Billabong, Indo Board, Burkie Boards) and Zander Venzia, would come to a definitive close with Burke taking the win on the day and the overall division gold. Burke would hunt and find Point’s barrels on route to an impressive victory amassing an average of 12 points on the two wave score. Venezia the young goofy footer would demonstrate great feel for the wave and link great combinations of snaps and cutbacks through to the inside of the break. Liam Grant who is rapidly progressing with good coaching and love for the sport would take third on the day to boast his overall standing to fifth, we expect a solid charge from Grant in 2012. In a long awaited return Jack Degruchy would return to surf competition to the acclaim “Jack is Back”, a brief sojourn from competition did not dampen his competitive drive and Degruchy found himself back in the winner’s circle with a fourth place on the day. Notable was seven year old Matteo Capasso who fearlessly charged wave faces three times his height and into the hearts of his many fans on the beach.

In the 12& Under division Che Allan (Quiksilver) would cement his overall victory for 2011 by overwhelming the field with an 11.5 two wave total. Allan has staked his claim at South Point and the young goofy footer relished in the long lefts combining his repertoire of fins free lips and massive floaters to a solid win. Jacob Burke would take the second on the day and the silver for the overall 2011 season. Zander Venezia was a repeat finalist and would take the third place finish in the division and fifth overall in the series. Evan Moll another Point local would round out the finalists. Moll would take some progressive lines in his quest for the finals and land a front side reverse in front of the crowd, he would take fourth place at Point and move himself up to a fourth place finish overall for the year.

The 14 & Under saw the rivalry between Joshua Burke and Dane Mackie continue, however Mackie in what would be a close final, would again take the win in Event 5 and the overall division again. Finishing second was Daniel Edghill, with Burke taking third and closing out second overall for the season. Fourth was Che Allan who would take third overall and Andrew Rose (Volcom, Arnette, Burkie Boards) in fifth on the day and a fourth place overall finish in the 14 & Under division. Jacob Burke rounded out the six man final with a six place at Point. Dane Mackie would also take first in the Under 16 division and again stomp the field with another overall victory for the year. Che Allan would take silver at Point and solidify third overall on the season. Joshua Burke would finish third on the day and second overall in the series with Calum Blandford finishing fourth in the panel of finalists at Point.

Finally the Girls 12 & Under division had not been run since the Club’s first event of the year. It was fantastic to see new interest from a talented group of young female surfers. Taking gold in her first event of the year was Roma Bellori with close friend Giselle Allan finishing in second, and Gabriella Gittens heading home with the bronze. Giselle Allan with her second won the overall division for the year. The Club supports the development of our young female groms and looks forward to these great surfers taking over the baton from the Chelseas as they move on to great things on the international junior female circuit.

The Club will now close off 2011 with our greatly anticipated Annual Awards Party which will take place at Ocean Spray Hotel, the home of Burkie Surf School, on the 17th February 2012. We look forward to a great time with parents, friends, family and most of all our great group of young surfers. Congrats to all and see you there. Overall divisional standings can be found online at http://www.bdosjuniorsurfing.org/pages/standings.php .

Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Jammin Cruises sponsored Long Beach event battles the elements for some great surfing

November 12th 2011, Long Beach, CH CH, Barbados:

The winds blasted every effort to set up tents, then the torrential rains battered competitors and officials alike, everyone huddling under the only available cover. These were the conditions that marked the fourth event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club’s Burkie Junior Surf Series sponsored by Jammin Cruises. Surfers relish in Mother Nature’s gifts and take the good with the bad and that is exactly what the Club’s juniors would set about doing. It has been a while since the last event surfing event has been held at Long Beach and the Club’s efforts to expose the competitors to a range of waves and conditions would bring out the best in each juniors’ performances no matter how Mother Nature could challenge them.

As the judges hid behind rows of umbrellas to keep the rain squalls at bay the Under 18 Open would hit the water. The difficult beach break conditions would be slashed and hacked by the Lost Enterprises sponsored Dane Mackie who would win the division with an 8.97 two wave total over second place Joshua Burke (Billabong, X-Trak, Vonzipper, Nixon, Futures Fins and Burkie Boards) who finished with a 7.97 two wave total. Third and fourth place would go to Evan Moll and Dylan Downie respectively with 5.97 and 2.57 two wave totals. Mackie now extends his lead over second place Burke in the Under 18 Open standings heading into the final event scheduled for early January. Also maintaining there position for a run at the title at the final event are Daniel Edghill and Chelsea Roett who are third and fourth in the overall rankings.

Moving onto the youngest of our groms, the 10 & Under division would see young Jacob Burke run away with the win and extend his lead in the overall standings. Burke who would stylishly carve and blast the end sections of every wave would finish with a 7.00 two wave total followed by Darrian Pitcher who would have a solid second place result to further his 2011 divisional campaign with a 4.20 wave total; third and fourth in the division were Zander Venezia and Yuri Scutt. Burke leads the overall standings heading into event 5 in January followed by Zander Venezia and Yuri Scutt. The contingent of the Club’s youngest groms is rapidly developing and the performance levels are rising exponentially we look forward to seeing what this class of juniors will bring to the international competition stage in the next few years.

Che Allan would again take the 12 & Under win to cement his standing in the race for the overall title. In a close fought battle that would see the goofyfooter exchange flowing re-entries to the shore break with second place Jacob Burke’s hacks and massive blast off the end section, Allan would finish with a 8.40 two wave total and Burke with 7.57 followed by Zander Venezia (4.67) and Evan Moll (4.13) in third and fourth respectively. Mathematically the division remains open heading into the last event with Che Allan, Jacob Burke and Andrew Rose all possible contenders for the crown, however Allan’s win has put sufficient distance between him and the other two contenders to make their end game indeed daunting.

The 14 & Under division was won by Dane Mackie (8.50) who now increases his lead in the division over the second placed Joshua Burke (5.60). The two groms have continually put on exciting performances with their progressive fins free and aerial assaults at every event this year. They continue to be bright beacons leading the way for all our juniors. Repeat finalists on the day who continued to shine in the challenging conditions were third place Evan Moll (3.33) and fourth Dylan Downie (3.17). Downie would notch another finals placing in the Under 16 Division, his third of third event, finishing fourth (3.07). The roles reversed between the super groms and Joshua Burke (6.23) would take the Under16 Division over close rival Dane Mackie (6.07) with Che Allan finishing in third (5.13). Burke leads the overall Under 16 standings heading down the stretch with Mackie and Allan still vying to topple him for the year end prize!

The Under 18 Girls would see Chelsea Roett take the overall win and the 2010 Under 18 Girls winner cement the overall division title for the second consecutive year. Finishing in second place was Gylla Mackenzie who gave a great performance to challenge Roett for the win. Absent from the event was Chelsea Tuach who was attending the Pan American Surfing Games in Guadeloupe. Both Roett and Tuach have been taking their talent to the world stage with both girls finishing equal 5th in the Rip Curl Grom Search US Finals in early November. We expect more great results from these talented surfers.

The Club thanks Jammin Cruises as a first time sponsor for our event and supporter of our junior surfers. We also thank the officials, parents and volunteers who weathered the constant rain squalls to make the event a success. Our final event is to be held with a two weekend waiting period either 7-8th or 14th-15th January, we are hopeful of a potential swell to awaken an exciting new location. Keep posted for further information; come and watch the most progressive Bajan groms in the best waves.

BURKE 3RD IN NORTH CAROLINA SURF EVENT

Wrightsville Beach, NC:
Top Barbados Junior surfer,14 yr old Josh Burke ,Barbados U-21 & U-16 National surfing Champion mostly dominated the 14-U division to finish 3rd at the 2011 WAPSS REEF SWEETWATER Pro-Am in Wrightville Beach North Carolina last weekend.Burke quickly became the surfer to beat after performing way beyond his years in the opening rounds where 64 of America's top junior surfers were battling it out for the championship prize which included a brand new surfboard combined with hundreds of dollars worth of surf gear and bragging rights! In the 4ft choppy conditions,Burke opened up his assault with a flurry of power carves, big off the top hacks combined with a display of carves, slashes and tailslides during the first four rounds of competition that had the crowd cheering and in the semi finals Burke caught a set wave, opened up with a huge off the top flowed into a massive bottom turn to set up for a power carve, throwing the rail wrapping it all the way around to bounce off the whitewater, generating speed rarely seen by a 14 yr old, pumping down the line to unleash the biggest air 180 reverse of the event to post a 9.6 out of a possible perfect 10pts,the highest scoring ride of the event and even had the pro division commentators to pause taking note and advising the 5000 plus spectators to watch "this little kid Josh Burke from Barbados".Burke also competed in the mens pro placing 33rd(84 entries) and in the 15-over/OPEN ( 85 entries) placing 7th..
Rob Machado of California was the Pro Champion. Next event for the U16 & U21 National Champ Burke is the $10000US MAKKA pro in Jamaica next weekend!
